At least 20,000 infected by Zika virus in Colombia

More than 20,000 people, including at least 2,116 pregnant women, have been infected with the Zika virus in the South American country of Colombia.

Colombia's National Health Institute reported on Saturday that it has recorded 20,297 cases of the infection, which makes it the second most affected country in the region after Brazil.

                               

The World Health Organisation warned this week that the virus is spreading in the Americas, with three million to four million cases expected this year.

Although the mosquito-borne virus's symptoms are relatively mild, it is believed to be linked to a surge in cases of microcephaly, a devastating condition in which a baby is born with an abnormally small head and brain.

Microcephaly is an untreatable disease that can cause permanent damage to the child's motor and cognitive development.

Brazil has reported as many as 1.5 million cases of Zika infection. Since the outbreak was detected there last year, 3,718 cases of microcephaly have been reported, compared to an average 163 cases a year before that.

The National Health Institute said that 1,050 of Colombia's Zika infection cases were confirmed by laboratory tests, 17,115 by clinical exams, and 2,132 were suspected cases.

Women have been the most affected in Colombia, accounting for 63.6 percent of the cases.

The government expects more than 600,000 people to become infected with the Zika virus in Colombia this year, and projects some 500 cases of microcephaly.

On Tuesday, Colombian authorities ordered hospitals in lower-lying areas to prepare for the spread of the disease, which is carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

It also recommended that couples delay attempts to become pregnant for six to eight months

Former Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic retires from football age 34

Former Manchester united captain Nemanja Vidic has announced his retirement.

The news comes after the 34-year-old defender formally rescinded his contract with Inter Milan earlier this month.

Vidic said on www.manutd.com "The time has come for me to hang up my boots.

"The injuries I have had in the last few years have taken their toll.

"I would like to thank all the players I have played with, all the managers and staff I have worked with, and say a big 'thank you' to the fans for their support over the years."

The Serbian - who made 56 appearances for his country - joined United in the 2005-06 season from Spartak Moscow and went on to form a fine centre-back partnership with Rio Ferdinand

Vidic's time with the Red Devils saw him win the 2007-08 Champions League, plus five Barclays Premier League titles.

He left Old Trafford to join Inter in July 2014 and played 28 times for the San Siro side, scoring one goal.

But hernia and back injuries meant he failed to feature for the Nerazzurri this season.

Prior to Friday's news, he had been linked with Aston Villa this month.

Legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson to return to Man U if Louis Van Gaal is sacked

                      

Former Man Utd coach Sir Alex Ferguson will return to Manchester United if Louis Van Gaal is sacked and Assistant manager Ryan Giggs is given the role of Head coach at Manchester United.

According to MirrorSport, Sir Alex Ferguson will take up a hands on role and assist Ryan Giggs from now till the end of the season if he is appointed as the new manager because of his close relationship with his former protege and his desire to see Man Utd progress under the Welshman

If Giggs does take charge before the end of the season, as he did when Moyes was sacked in 2014, he would ask for Ferguson’s help him in the closing months of the campaign – and possibly beyond. I understand Ferguson – who has refused offers to comment on United since he stepped down – wouldn’t refuse that request, especially from one of his favourite former stars, although it’s believed he wouldn’t want a return to the dugout.’

Whether the Ferguson story is true or not, the underlying point is that LVG is walking a tightrope once again. United are currently sixth in the division, and fears are starting to heighten that the Red Devils will not qualify for the Champions League next season.
